No frights in well-crafted Ghost Maps debut

Mapping the way: Jeff Martin

Ghost Maps - The Ocean From The River (Casino Gravity)

Halfset – those exemplary Dublin-based instrumentalists – have been very quiet of late but, in the meantime, founding member Jeff Martin is releasing a beguiling album under the Ghost Maps moniker.

With three solo albums under his own name behind him, Martin is no stranger to going it alone and this quietly beautiful collection confirms his status as one of our most under-rated songwriters.

The album is entirely composed of organic instruments – electronic flourishes have been eschewed – and, as his been his wont to date, he favours a textured, understated approach that reveals considerable craft.

There are nods to conventional songwriting too, especially on the sweetly orchestrated Vanilla, which suits his direct, if somewhat limited, vocals. Martin has assembled a fine cast of musicians, including John McEntire.
