Lily Allen brands writer ‘a bitter old troll’
A bitter row has erupted between Lily Allen and writer Julie Burchill, who dismissed the singer as an "overprivileged crybaby" in a newspaper column.
In an article about Cheryl Cole in The Sun, Burchill, who is 51, wrote: "I adore the way she spat back at that overprivileged crybaby Lily Allen when the public-school tool took a poke at her way back in the day."
But her comments did not go unnoticed by Allen, who described Burchill as an "ignorant bitter old troll" on her Twitter page.
Allen and Burchill are both known for making outspoken and controversial remarks, so perhaps it was no surprise that the row did not end there.
Reacting to Allen's tweet Burchill told a newspaper: "It was partly over Cole, but partly because Allen had said something ignorant ---- about the working class and I wrote what a nerve she had as a public-school mockney."
She claimed that Allen's mother, film producer Alison Owen, had once asked her not to bully her daughter.
Allen's latest response on Twitter read: "The amateur psychiatrist in me says [Burchill] sees a lot of her younger self in me, and she's a bit of a 'self-loather'."
Miss Burchill responded: "No, Lily, dear. I love me. I loathe you!"
Fellow Twitter users quickly took sides.
@Herzformig, from Liverpool, wrote: "Well done to Julie Birchill for telling that ugly, fat pig Lily Allen what she is. Pug faced monster. She's worse than her useless father."
@pinkystan, Lucy Knight from Leeds, said: "@lilyroseallen don't feed the trolls! Julie Birchill looks like Droopy, we love you."
Allen is due in Dublin this weekend with her half sister Sarah Owens to launch their clothing label Lucy in Disguise at Brown Thomas, Grafton street.
