Tim Farron has revealed that the person he would most like to meet in the world is his teenage pin-up Wendy Smith from 1980s band Prefab Sprout.
The Liberal Democrat leader insisted they were the "greatest band in the history of ever" as he declared his desire to meet the group's keyboard player and backing singer.
But Mr Farron acknowledged that the conversation would be limited as all he would be able to say "in a high-pitched squeaky voice" would be "I've got all your records".
The LibDem, who was in a band variously known as The Voyeurs or Fred The Girl in his youth, said he had contacted Smith in the hope of winning her support for his leadership bid - but was still waiting for an answer.
At the party's conference in Bournemouth he was asked by an activist who he would most like to meet and what he would say.
He replied: "I guess you are expecting me to say some very important political or philosophical figure. Instead I am going to say Wendy Smith from Prefab Sprout."
Explaining his obsession, he said they were "the greatest band in the history of ever, Steve McQueen the greatest album in the history of ever".
Mr Farron said he contacted Smith, who was "my teenage pin-up", on Twitter during the leadership election earlier this year asking for her endorsement.
"She very politely replied 'I'm thinking about it'. And she is, er, still thinking about it.
"And if I did meet her I would just say, in a high-pitched squeaky voice 'I've got all your records'."
