The chart-topping rockers - whose fifth album, Come Around Sundown, was recently number one - will top the bill for one night of the three-day event next June.

Organisers say it will be the Tennessee quartet's only major UK festival appearance in 2011.

Kings Of Leon, who played a triumphant headline slot at Glastonbury in 2008, have also lined up a number of large outdoor events next summer of their own, including a return to London's Hyde Park.

Next year's festival will be the 10th since it was revived. It had begun life in the late 1960s, and featured performances by Jimi Hendrix and The Who.

Isle Of Wight Festival promoter John Giddings said: "We are proud to bring one of the world's biggest rock bands to the island on our 10th anniversary. It is an incredible way to start the weekend, I can't wait."

Tickets for the event, which takes place from June 10 to 12, go on sale on Friday November 19.
