Joe McElderry has said he is "fine" despite reports that he is about to be dropped by Simon Cowell's record company.

The former X Factor winner was at his new apartment in his native South Shields, South Tyneside, on Friday and appeared to be in good spirits, dressed in a hoodie and tracksuit bottoms.

Asked how he was, he replied: "I'm fine" but declined to answer further questions.

The 19-year-old Geordie has moved a stone's throw from the flat he shared with his mother to a posh new development.

It was reported that Joe, who won the singing contest in 2009, will not have his record contract renewed by Syco Music.

He has released three solo singles since winning the contest, but only the first, The Climb, topped the charts.

His album, Wide Awake, peaked at number three in the UK chart last year.
