Irish folk singer Jimmy Crowley on the memorable moments of his life so far.

What's been the best decade of your life so far and why?

I'm in my 60s and think the decade you're in is always the best.

What was the worst moment of your life?

Would you believe one of them was when I was 16 and my best friend told me I'd failed the Inter Cert? I hadn't of course, but for a minute I thought I'd let my parents down, and the feeling was so horrible it has stayed with me.

What secret skill or talent do you have?

I'm great at counselling people. I've great patience for listening.

If there was one song you associated with your youth, what would it be?

Island of Dreams by Dusty Springfield. My dad used to shout, "Jimmy, your song is on the radio."

What was the last lie you told?

That everything was great when it wasn't.

What do you consider the greatest work of art?

The Book of Kells. I like the idea of a group of men on a higher register of beauty and art and faith dedicating themselves to creating it.

Which local star in any field should the world outside of Britain and Ireland know about?

Cork singer Jimmy MacCarthy, who is every bit as good as Paul Simon.

What is your greatest regret?

I would love to have had a massive hit when I was around 25 or 28 years of age.

What is your ultimate guilty pleasure?

A nice slow-burning pipe of plug tobacco, a drop of Powers whiskey with nothing in it, and a pint bottle of Guinness.

Who is/was the love of your life?

Evelyn Murray who I was married to for 26 years. We're separated now for eight years and are the best of friends.

What is your present state of mind?

I am in a very happy place creatively.

What are the consolations of getting older?

You're old enough to be honest and say, "I'm too old for that."

What living heroes or heroines do you have?

Margaretta D'Arcy, the anti-war activist who was jailed for trespassing on the runway at Shannon Airport.

What is your best chat up line?

Grab your coat, you've scored.

What is the best lesson life has taught you?

Live in the moment. Remember, life is a gift.

Jimmy Crowley and Stokers Lodge: Grand Reunion, at The Everyman, Cork, on Sunday, March 16, 8pm.
