Is Rihanna more talented than the Beatles?

Anita Singh

Rhanna is a better artist than the Beatles or the Rolling Stones because she can dance as well as sing, according to Tony Blackburn.

The veteran DJ does not subscribe to the notion that the 1960s were a golden age of music.

“I actually think today’s artists are better than those of yesteryear,” he said.

“The Beatles and the Stones just stood there with guitars and sang. These days people like Rihanna can sing and dance and do everything.”

Blackburn, 69, began his career with the pirate stations Radio Caroline and Radio London in the 1960s, and became the first DJ to broadcast on BBC Radio One when it launched in 1967.

He was a regular presenter on Top of the Pops, which featured the dance troupe Pan’s People from 1968-1976. But he told Radio Times that he was not a fan, saying: "I found Pan’s People unfriendly. I don’t think they were the best dancers in the world either."

Blackburn said he was “reliably informed” that the Prince of Wales was among his fans in the Radio London days.

In the interview, he also claimed to have slept with 500 women in his heyday. “I did very well,” he said. “I’m not proud of it, but I was single in the 60s.”
