Coldplay's new single has been downloaded by two million people since it was put online last week.

Violet Hill was first made available as a free download last Tuesday.

The song is the band's first single from new album Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends.

Coldplay's website was hit by technical glitches when the song first went online, because of the huge demand.

A spokesman for the band said: “In the past seven days the single has been downloaded for free by a staggering two million people.

“It would have outsold the whole of last week's top 40 (singles) four times over.”

The album release on June 12 is set to follow the success of the X&Y, the band’s 2005 album which sold 10 million copies.

Violet Hill is released commercially today. Fronted by Chris Martin, Coldplay have been one of the most commercially successful acts of the last few years, selling more than 30 million albums.

The band achieved fame with the release of their single Yellow in 2000.
