Gary Barlow has treated schoolchildren to a live performance at the launch of plans for an X Factor-style singing competition for schools.
The Take That star performed the band's hit single Greatest Day, playing on the piano and supported by a backing band made up of pupils at Brine Leas High School in Nantwich, Cheshire.
He said it was "such a nice surprise" for him to sing, adding: "The future of music is really in this room today, it is in every classroom and school all over Britain."
He went on: "When I say that, I don't just say that because the next Elton John or the next Paul McCartney might be in this room - I mean it because the next audience for music is in this room."
Conservative leader David Cameron was also at the school as his party launched plans for the School Stars competition to encourage musical achievement among young people.
Gary stressed the event was about music, not politics, but said he would watch a recording of Thursday night's TV debate after missing the event last night as he was at a Music Week dinner.
