IT has been an iconic Christmas anthem for generations but now singer Shane MacGowan has given Fairytale of New York a festive soap-themed makeover.

The Pogues front man had been rumoured to be filming a cameo for Coronation Street when he was pictured enjoying a drink in The Rovers Return last month.

But yesterday it emerged Shane is teaming up with a number of Corrie stars to belt out a new version of the hit, entitled 'Fairytale of Weatherfield'.

The performance, due to be aired on TV later next month, will be the highlight of ITV's star-studded Text Santa initiative and will raise funds for British charities, such as Age UK, Barnardos and Help The Hospices.

Fairytale of New York, in which MacGowan duets with the late singer Kirsty MacColl, is widely regarded as the best Christmas song ever produced, as well as being the most frequently-played festive single of the 21st Century.
