Morrissey has sent his first tweet from his official Twitter account... five years after joining the social media network.

The ex-Smiths frontman joined the microblogging website in June 2009, according to his online profile, but he failed to send his first tweet until yesterday.

The singer wrote; “Hello. Testing, 1, 2, 3. Planet Earth, are you there? One can only hope...”

Following his first tweet, Morrissey’s followers have more than doubled to over 200,000.

Catching on to the Twitter-bug, he later wrote; “Follow, follow, follow. Twitter is the perfect metaphor for...something. Dunno what.”

The tweet received over 4,500 retweets.

But fans have yet to feel the love from the singer as he follows just one profile on the website, his record company ‘Harvest Records’.

Morrissey is currently promoting his upcoming studio album, ‘World Peace Is None Of Your Business’.

The musician released his comeback single on Tuesday. It’s the follow-up to 2009’s ‘Years of Refusal’.

Morrissey released his highly-anticipated autobiography, entitled ‘Autobiography’, last autumn.
