Ed Sheeran has returned with new music - and said his new facial scar made him look "rugged".

The star, 25, sports the mark on his face following reports Princess Beatrice accidentally cut him in a party prank when she pretended to "knight" singer James Blunt with a ceremonial sword.

Sheeran, who has surprised fans with two new songs, said he did not know if he was allowed to discuss the incident.

"I don't know if I can talk about that", he told the Radio 1 Breakfast Show.

"Do you like it? I think it's quite rugged," he quipped.

"I have been telling people that it was James Blunt, trying to get the pop career back. He's been telling me to say that. I'm not being mean."

The star, 25, who took a year-long hiatus from the music scene and social media, is back with the tracks Castle On The Hill and Shape Of You.

Sheeran "relearnt everything" because he forgot the lyrics to some of his famous songs during his time away.

New track Castle On The Hill is described as a "love song for Suffolk", where Sheeran grew up, while Shape Of You was originally intended for Rihanna.

The singer kept schtum on reports that he would be headlining Glastonbury, saying: "I don't know what you're talking about."

He confirmed he recorded some of the new album on a cruise ship, but joked he went hungry because he did not have a "dinner suit".

"My biggest market in the world is the Philippines and every staff member on the boat was Filipino so I just had a wave of people come to my room every five minutes asking for selfies," he said.

"I spent my whole time taking pictures with Filipino people..."

Sheeran released his new music at 5am with the statement: "I really wanted to show two different sides to my music that I'm equally as passionate about and I just knew I wanted to roll with two songs at the same time. I'm absolutely buzzing to be back."

His return comes after he posted a short video of himself on Friday holding up a sign reading: "New music coming Friday!!"

The Thinking Out Loud singer announced in 2015 he was "taking a break from my phone, emails and all social media for a while" because he was "seeing the world through a screen and not my eyes".

He promised fans a third album was in the making and that it would be "the best thing I have made thus far".
