Pete Doherty has appeared in court charged with possessing cocaine.
The Babyshambles frontman was arrested after police investigated the suspected overdose death of heiress Robin Whitehead.
The 27-year-old filmmaker spent the last 10 days of her life filming a documentary about the musician, who has battled with drugs.
At Thames Magistrates' Court, Doherty appeared alongside two of his friends, Peter Wolfe and Alan Wass, who were also charged with drug offences.
Before the judge entered the courtroom, Doherty, Wolfe and Wass posed together for a photograph which Doherty took on his mobile phone. Doherty, who was wearing a brown coat, a beige jumper with a hole in it, black tuxedo-style trousers and black suede shoes, spoke only to confirm his name and address.
Miss Whitehead's half-sister Sian watched the proceedings from the public gallery. After the short hearing she approached Doherty and said: "I'm Robin's sister."
The 31-year-old singer kissed her on the cheek and replied: "I am really sorry about your sister."
A spokeswoman for Poplar Coroners Court said no date has yet been set for an inquest into Miss Whitehead's death.
It is understood all three men will deny the charges. The case was adjourned for a committal hearing at the same court on January 14.
