Diamond slot is jewel in crown for Byrne
A YEAR ago she was singing Neil Diamond songs in front of a few punters in her local pub. But this summer Mary Byrne will be Neil Diamond's support act in front of 45,000 fans at the Aviva Stadium.
The Irish Independent has learnt the former checkout worker has been asked to support the American singing legend on June 25.
"Am I excited about it? I still can't believe it's happening," Byrne said last night.
"It's just been this huge, huge secret for the past few weeks, I wanted to tell people but couldn't.
"I've loved Neil Diamond since I got my first record player and here I am playing with him in my hometown."
But this will be no ordinary show.
When Byrne (51) takes to the stage at 8pm she will be performing in front of an anticipated crowd of 45,000 at only the second concert to take place at the redeveloped stadium in Dublin.
"The scale of this is something I don't think I will understand until I walk out on stage. Heaven help me what it's going to feel like," she said.
The mother of one was speaking from Edinburgh, Scotland, where she is promoting her debut album, 'Mine & Yours', which is released today.
Tickets for the show, from €65.70, are available from Ticketmaster.
