Crisp sax and brass in the Hot House

Hot House Big Band
Wind Machine (no label)
This 17-piece outfit is led by Mark Wilde (alto sax) and includes veteran saxophonist Jim Farrelly, Derek O'Connor (tenor sax) and Danny Healy (trumpet), both of the Dublin City Jazz Orchestra.
The title track sets the tone with a piano intro, legato saxes and crisp brass.
Three vocalists sing one number each. Sinead Conway is the best, bringing Dinah Washington back to life on Mad About The Boy.
The eight-track CD ends with Dave Gold's delightful arrangement of The Beatles' Norwegian Wood. This is the only long piece, giving O'Connor, Paul Dunlea (trombone) and Healy a chance to spread out and show their paces.
The Hot House Big Band plays every Monday night in the Mercantile Bar from 9pm.
Matthew Halpin, a gifted young tenor-player, and student at Berklee College of Music, Boston, will lead a quintet in JJ Smyth's tonight.
He is also the Sligo Jazz Project's youngest tutor, and will perform at the Sligo Jazz Festival (24-29 July).
