Conor Behan: Top diva for next year? Place your bets now...

As 2013 drags to a close there are pop divas looking at limp album sales and crying into their sizeable wardrobes.

Britney Spears and Lady Gaga both struggled to sell albums at their usual pace this year but with Gaga there seems to be enough songs sticking around to ensure she'll get through. Spears, meanwhile, is enjoying that Vegas pay cheque and rumoured to be planning retirement.

No sign of that from Beyoncé, who may be returning to play here early next year, but shocked many by releasing a new album last week with no fanfare. Filming 17 videos is an undertaking most pop stars would balk at but it's an impressive showing from Mrs Carter given how she teased her fanbase all year.

Miley Cyrus' one-two punch of We Can't Stop and Wrecking Ball dominated this year and will help her flog concert tickets for a show based around her new image.

It'll be interesting to see if she can sustain the hype next year or it'll fizzle out. Katy Perry will still be all over radio like a rash.

Despite a weak album Perry has stacked enough radio-bait to ensure that she'll stick around.

Her workmanlike approach to pop can be irritating but she's the safest bet of the current pop ladies and continues to reap those rewards. Rihanna could be the one who surprises next year.

She's been relatively low-key in 2013 and has had so many hits that she can continue to cherry pick pop styles to keep things fresh.

But if 2013's success story Lorde is anything to go by, the names we'll really be obsessing over may not even make themselves clear for another few months.

Either way, in 12 months' time there'll be plenty of pop antics to trawl over. Here's to 2014!
