Fiddler on the Roof, now at the Gaiety, is an enduring musical, with standout song If I Were a Rich Man at the centre of everything.
Though it appears to have been around forever, the author Joseph Stein (music by Jerry Bock), who based it on the book Tevye and His Daughters, died just six months ago.
At the Gaiety, Tony Finnegan as Tevye, the wise and much put-upon milkman in a Jewish enclave in Tsarist Russia, delivers a superb performance throughout. He is ably supported by Ellen McElroy as his severe but good-hearted wife Golde and a cast of daughters including Lucy O'Byrne, Rachel Gleeson and Katie Honan -- the drama springing from the youngest daughter's unorthodox choice of husband
It is delightful to see Veronica Dunne as Grandma Tzeitzel and the apparition of the three airborne ghosts is one of the many memorable moments in this production, directed and designed by Cav. Vivian Coates. Aidan Faughey is music director and Siobhan McQuillan choreographer for this Jim Molloy production.
'Fiddler On The Roof' runs at the Gaiety Theatre, Dublin, until April 2
