Leicestershire Police said they have 5,500 of the bungee cords to give away on-site to rockers at Download Festival at Donington Park near Castle Donington, this weekend.

Officers said the coiled silicone devices which fasten phones to belt loops were so popular with some of the 110,000 revellers last year that the force's Chief Constable ended up giving his own one away.

The force is hoping the hand-outs, which are being part-funded by organisers Festival Republic, will cut phone losses and thefts.

Detective Constable Kev Walker, of Leicestershire Police, said: "The bungees were phenomenally popular last year with hundreds of people asking us for them.

"Our Chief Constable even gave away the one he was using.

"They were very popular but they were also very effective as we only had 11 mobile phone thefts reported to us.

"We'd like to keep the numbers low again if we can and the bungee is a really easy way of making sure your phone remains attached to you and cannot be stolen."

Melvin Benn, Festival Republic's managing director, said: "The free bungee clips are a great way to keep your belongings extra safe."

Headlining the 11th Download Festival are German metal band Rammstein, who play Friday, with Ozzy Osbourne leading Black Sabbath out on stage on Saturday.

British heavy metal veterans Iron Maiden will close the festival with a set on Sunday night.

Organisers have re-named the main stage The Lemmy Stage this year following the death of Motorhead's lead singer Lemmy Kilmister in December.

Motorhead had been due to play the festival on the opening night, but pulled out following his death from cancer.
