Susan Boyle's version of Lou Reed's Perfect Day will be released on her new album despite her previously being stopped from performing the track on television.

Earlier this month, Simon Cowell branded the former Velvet Underground frontman "petty" for not allowing Boyle to sing the song on America's Got Talent.

He said: "We've flown her over and she is going to perform Perfect Day by Lou Reed.

"Two hours before she is going to perform it we get a phone call. Lou Reed will not allow her to sing Perfect Day."

The song is the opening track on her second album, called The Gift, and features alongside a mixture of festive favourites and pop classics.

The Scottish singer has recorded her own version of Don't Dream It's Over by Crowded House, Leonard Cohen's much-covered Hallelujah and traditional Christmas songs Away In A Manger and The First Noel.

She said: "When making this album, I really wanted the songs to touch hearts. Music has always been a companion to me, particularly on special occasions. I wanted there to be a mix of songs that would flow with all our moods this holiday season. As much as the season is a time for reflection, it is also a time for fun and enjoyment with those closest to us."

Boyle shot to fame overnight after appearing on Britain's Got Talent and her debut album was one of the fastest-selling albums of the decade.

Cowell said: "Susan broke all the rules, became famous literally overnight and has become one of the world's most popular singers. I'm incredibly proud and pleased for her. I think Susan has gone a step further with this new album. She is a very special lady."

The album is released on Monday, November 15.
