Boy George opens up about sobriety

Boy George said he works hard at staying sober

Boy George has told how he is beating his addiction problems.

The music star has previously battled a drug problem but is now on the straight and narrow and said he puts a lot of work into maintaining his sobriety, reported the Daily Mirror.

The star - real name George O'Dowd - said he changed his life after serving time in prison in 2009 for the assault and false imprisonment of a male escort.

He said: "I invest a lot of work into my sobriety, into staying clean. I'm not prepared to give that up for anything or anyone."

George, 52 - who credits his family with helping him beat his demons - revealed he sees himself as a different person these days.

"I look back on how I was and think, 'Who the hell were you? How the hell did you even cross the road when you were like that?' And I'm not even talking about when I was off my head, I'm talking about when I was normal. I was pretty much bonkers," he admitted.

"I don't think I'm that person now.

"The good news is I know I'm an addict, that's something I've become very aware of. As an addict in recovery I know I can't do one of anything, even a cigarette. These aren't options for me any more and that really is the big change for me."
