Thirty-six people were taken to hospital after suffering from dehydration, while as many as 50 others were treated or evaluated at the scene during an electronic dance music show at the TD Garden arena.

"Just hearing the awful news abt tonight. Its a terrible thing, I rly hope everyone is ok! My thoughts go to those affected & their families," tweeted the Swedish DJ, whose real name is Tim Bergling.

Boston EMS Deputy Superintendent Mike Bosse said all of the patients' symptoms were minor. He also said all of those transported and treated appeared to be between 16 and 25 years old.

Bosses blamed alcohol and drug use for the problems, but some concert-goers blamed oppressive heat inside the arena.

Roisin Saratonion, 18, told the Boston Globe: "It was just too crazy in there. You get really hot in there and you just pass out. You couldn't breathe. It was claustrophobic. People get dehydrated."

Nineteen-year-old concert-goer Mike Santostefano saw three young women being carried out on stretchers. "You couldn't breathe if you were on the floor. It was the best and worst time ever," he said.

A spokeswoman for concert promoter Live Nation said early reports indicate that a majority of those taken to the hospital were people outside who were too intoxicated to be allowed inside.

It's not the first time that people have been taken ill at an Avicii gig. Twenty-nine people were taken to hospital with various degrees of health problems at a concert in Toronto earlier this year.
