Australia have given their first ever performance for the Eurovision Song Contest after being invited as this year's special guests.

Guy Sebastian had the honour of representing his country's debut in the competition with Tonight Again, going on stage as the 12th act at Vienna's Wiener Stadthalle.

He is expected to give Australia a good shot at success as one of their best-selling musicians and the only male artist ever to get six number one singles and two number one albums in Australian chart history.

The nation was invited to take part as a special guest to mark the contest's 60th anniversary, which this year is taking place in Austria.

Viewers seemed impressed with Australia's performance, with Lucyelle Cliffe tweeting: "Yes! That's how you do a live vocal! Go Australia" while a user called Joakim J tweeted: "Australia is doing Eurovision wrong. You're not supposed to send people who can sing."

But others couldn't understand why the Antipodeans had been included.

Chloe Louise tweeted: "How are Australia in the Eurovision when it's not even in Europe" and Laura Juliet Mercer added: "Umm why on earth are Australia on Eurovision?"

Earlier in the evening, UK act Electro Velvet performed their electro-swing offering Still In Love With You, as one of 27 acts hoping to be crowned the winner by the rest of Europe.

Last year's winner Conchita Wurst has been hosting the event from the green room where she has been chatting to acts backstage, while Graham Norton is presenting the UK's TV coverage.

Sweden, Belgium, Russia and Italy are among the favourites, according to the latest odds from bookies William Hill.

TV chef Nigella Lawson is due to announce the UK's voting and scores later in the evening.
