Arresting sight Jedward top charts
ONCE it seemed they would only enjoy fleeting fame as early losers of a TV reality show.
But the phenomenon that is Jedward continues to confound with news that twin brothers John and Edward Grimes have hit number one in the Irish album charts.
Manager Louis Walsh phoned his act at midday yesterday to confirm that their debut album 'Planet Jedward' had officially entered the Irish sales charts at number one.
Certified Gold, an industry source, confirmed that sales of the album were in the region of 10,000 copies, giving it the biggest selling week one sale of any album released in Ireland so far this year.
"We know our parents, our aunts and uncles were going to buy it but we still can't believe how many CDs we've sold," a stunned John Grimes told the Irish Independent.
"We used to try and get other popstars to number one, now we're up there. It's wild," added brother Edward.
Not even a headline slot at Oxegen could save tough US rapper Eminem the embarrassment of being knocked off the number one slot by the two young fellas from Lucan.
DVD rental chain Xtra-vision should shoulder some blame, having purchased 10,000 copies in advance which it sold nationwide at €13.99.
All eyes will now be on the UK where the album is released on July 26.
