Album Review: Washed Out - Within and Without * * * *

A leading proponent of a recently coined sub-genre, 'chillwave', Ernest Greene fuses retro electronica with the poppier end of new wave to create blissed-out, lo-fi summer songs. Two tracks, in particular, Amor Fati and You and I (the latter featuring gorgeous vocals from Chairlift's Caroline Polachek) are uncommonly lovely dream-pop delights.
Ben Allen -- whose production credits includes Animal Collective's 2009 opus Merriweather Post Pavilion -- helps imbue a psychedelic feel to several of Greene's meticulously arranged atmospheric tracks. The quieter, subtler songs, meanwhile, recall a low-key Moby -- not a bad thing at all.
