Album Review: Rodrigo y Gabriela - Live in France * * *

Even Rodrigo y Gabriela's biggest fans might baulk at the news that they're releasing yet another live album.
Live in France is their third following the Dublin/Manchester and Japan concert albums. And there's been a live EP too.
At this stage, the Mexican guitar duo have almost released as many live albums as they have studio documents. Yet, when one considers that their live shows tend to capture an electric intensity that is often missing in their dry studio recordings, perhaps there's method in their actions.
Certainly, this album -- recorded throughout France -- shows what a thrilling virtuoso pair Rodrigo and Gabriela can be.
The recordings lean heavily on their most recent studio album, 11:11, with Hanuman and Buster Voodoo sounding more essential here than on the original album.
One can sense the two drawing from the crowd's energy and pushing themselves to an intoxicating level.
No doubt they'll have something special up their sleeves when they play their adopted home later this month [Marlay Park, July 31].
