One Direction's Niall Horan has spoken out against the fans and paparazzi who pursue the band on the motorways, calling the chases "dangerous" and scary".

Speaking to Scott Mills on Radio 1, he explained: "We've been chased down the street and on the motorways at 70 miles an hour, and surely that's not safe... They're hanging out of windows, stuff like that - at 70 miles an hour, switching lanes.

"They're going fast and it's quite scary."

In a series of social media posts in the last few weeks, the 21-year-old has been calling for an end to the car chases, pleading on Twitter: "Cmon guys, just lay off on the chases today please, been a long day so far, just wanna relax and enjoy the city with my friends, thank you".

The star explained he did not want to sound "moan-y" and admitted it can "come with the territory", but appealed for some privacy and for safer driving.

He added: "We go to these cities and we don't get to see a lot of them. We have friends in a lot of these places so it's nice to try and get out and see them."

Mills congratulated Horan on One Direction's latest number one, Drag Me Down, adding: "You didn't need that other guy" - a reference to Zayn Malik, who left the band in March.

Horan laughed, but returned to the point shortly afterwards, telling the DJ: "You didn't say that - I didn't..."

The singer also revealed he was "shocked" that the single had been One Direction's best-performing song so far.

"Obviously when we dropped the single we didn't realise that was the reaction it was gonna get - but it kind of worked out," he explained.

We knew we had a good song, but you never know what the reaction's gonna be."
