1D pair call in lawyers after alleged drug use video is leaked online
Two members of boyband One Direction have called in lawyers after a video showing them apparently smoking an "illegal substance" was leaked on to the internet.
Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson have yet to comment on the accusations that they were taking drugs while in Peru – but they did perform in Sunderland last night.
The band, who sang for nearly 250,000 people in Croke Park last weekend, has been rocked by the claims since a video surfaced on a UK tabloid website.
"This matter is in the hands of our lawyers," their publicist said.
In the video, 22-year-old Louis says "joint lit, happy days," and asks his bandmate, "What do you think Zayn about that kind of content?" Zayn (21) replies: "Very controversial."
The incident occurred while the boyband stopped in Lima, Peru, last month as part of their international tour.
The video led some angry fans to post photos of them burning One Direction's concert tickets yesterday.
However, Irish member Niall Horan suggested it was business as usual last night, tweeting: "Sunderland are you ready? Just sticking my jacket on! It's lashin rain!"
Louis and Zayn reference drugs in a number of ways in the five-minute clip. Tomlinson says "Mary J" is part of Malik's warm-up routine before a show, appearing to reference Mary Jane, another word for marijuana. The singers also acknowledge police officers riding on bikes next to their car.
"He's thinking, 'I'm sure I can smell an illegal substance in there,'" Louis says. "And he's hit the nail on the head."
