Music: Through the Window in the Sunshine Room by A Lazarus Soul ***
(Intent to Supply Records)
Last year was a remarkably fine one for home-grown music. How will 2011 turn out? This third album from a Dublin-based outfit suggests it might be a good one too.
With production from the ever-talented Joe Chester, A Lazarus Soul have created an evocative soundscape somewhere between Depeche Mode and Moby. Brian Brannigan has grown into a fine songwriter, too. Save Our Greenbelt takes ecological awareness to a local level as he ruminates on the Strawberry Beds -- that lovely part of west Dublin beside the Liffey.
Elsewhere, A Penthouse View offers a jaundiced, Morrissey-like contemplation on the emptiness of modern, consumer life. It appears to have been written pre-recession, as Brannigan notes "we had more class when we had not two pennies".
