Music: Kurt Wagner and Cortney Tidwell ****

This is a covers album that certainly deserves to stand out from the pack.
The Lambchop mainman and relative newcomer Tidwell have reworked 60s and 70s rarities from the venerable country music label Chart Records, and their efforts veer from melancholy to lachrymose.
Incredibly Lonely could hardly be better named as Wagner's time-worn baritone and Tidwell's delicate delivery tug on the heartstrings, while the bittersweet He's Only A Memory Away, beautifully sung by Tidwell, would move even the hardest soul to tears.
The songs -- originally recorded by LaWanda Lindsey and Gene & Rod, among others -- are morose, there's no doubt about that, but there's real potency in this collection.
For those who loved Raising Sand, the collaboration between Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, this is highly recommended as a companion album.
