Music: Halcyon Digest by Deerhunter * * * *

Dismiss Deerhunter as a hipster's folly at your peril. This fourth album shows just why Bradford Cox and friends have been showered with such euphoric praise. Their psychedelic, hypnotic brand of indie rock has its roots in the past, but they're no mere revivalists. Like all the best bands, they take potent influences and create something special.
With production from Ben Allen -- who helped make Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavilion so special -- the Atlanta quartet really push the boat out, not least on closer He Would Have Laughed, which was written in tribute of the late Jay Reatard.
Much of the album is mesmeric, including the lengthy coda of Desire Lines which finds guitarist Lockett Pundt in exhilarating form.
