Music: Feeder - Renegades **
(Big Teeth Music)
The Cardiff band have never truly recovered from the suicide of founding member Jon Lee. Since his death, Grant Nicholas and Taka Hirose have struggled to match the hook-laden, indie power pop of their breakthrough fourth album Echo Park, and this record sees them revert to the misguided grunge that characterised their earliest records.
Renegades is a brief album -- clocking in at around 34 minutes -- but even such a short runtime suggests there's significant malaise at play. The guitars may be loud and urgent, but they don't pack a punch. Is this the sound of two guys in their early 40s going through the motions?
