Robert Zemeckis is reportedly in talks to direct sci-fi film Chaos Walking.

The Oscar-winning Forrest Gump filmmaker is said to be in negotiations to take the reins on the big-screen adaptation of the first book of Patrick Ness' young adult trilogy.

A source confirmed that talks are taking place to The Wrap, adding that no deal is in place yet.

Chaos Walking, which Oscar-winning screenwriter Charlie Kaufman is adapting, is set in a dystopian future where humans have taken over a distant planet. The story focuses on a young male Todd Hewitt, who holds the key to stopping planet-wide destruction and saving mankind.

The series features three books - The Knife Of Never Letting Go, The Ask And The Answer and Monsters Of Men.

After years of making motion-capture animated movies like The Polar Express and Beowulf, Robert - who also directed Back To The Future, Cast Away and Who Framed Roger Rabbit - made his live-action directing return with Flight.

The film starred Denzel Washington, who received an Oscar nod for his performance.

The 62-year-old filmmaker has also been developing an adaptation of Elizabeth L Silver's murder mystery novel The Execution Of Noa P Singleton and Nathaniel Halpern's script Rose with his producing partner Jack Rapke.
