Mrs Biggs creator Jeff Pope is writing a one-off film about vintage comedy duo Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy.

Jeff, who also penned Northern Lights and Appropriate Adult and worked with Steve Coogan on the film Philomena, is writing the 90-minute show for the BBC.

Laurel, who was born in Ulverston, Cumbria, learned his trade in music hall before the First World War then moved to the United States where he eventually teamed up with Hardy.

The pair made their names with a series of slapstick comedy films characterised by Laurel's childlike approach to life and Hardy's pompous personality.

Hardy died in 1957 and three years later Laurel was given an honorary Oscar.
