The Hot Fuzz filmmaker is swapping ants for grasshoppers for the big-screen adaptation of Andrew Smith's young adult novel, said The Hollywood Reporter.

The 40-year-old, who left Marvel's Ant-Man over creative differences in May, is tipped for the director's role with Sony film studio.

He also dropped a hint on Twitter, where he posted a video montage of the book's reviews, with the words: "Read this book. You will enjoy."

Scott Rosenberg has adapted the 2014 book for the big screen, which follows a teenager, in Iowa, who accidentally unleashes an unstoppable army of six-foot-tall praying mantises.

Edgar, who is best known for his collaborations with Nick Frost and Simon Pegg on The World's End, Shaun Of The Dead and Hot Fuzz as well as Scott Pilgrim Vs The World, was previously rumoured to direct musical drama Baby Driver, which has been in development for over six years.
