The British actor stars as Noah's nemesis Tubal-cain in Darren Aronofsky's Biblical remake opposite Russell Crowe as Noah.

"It's Noah's Ark - I laughed when it first came through. 'What am I going to do in Noah's Ark? It's a biblical piece'. I laughed again when they said Russell Crowe's playing Noah - 'How can Russell play Noah?'" he admitted.

"But then I thought I've never seen Russell in a bad film. Then I read the script and I went, 'You know what? Lovely'. I turned up and had four wonderful months on a film with really clever people. I had a ball."

The Sweeney star also heaped praise on Coldplay, who were executive producers on his new film Ashes.

"Coldplay were great - we couldn't have made the film without them. They're a good bunch of boys," he said.

The 55-year-old star of Nil By Mouth and Sexy Beast reckoned the British film industry needs to invest in their own cinemas.

"I think the British film industry and the arts have really got to concentrate on buying their own cinemas," he said.

"Warner Bros or somebody owns them, and why would they put on one of our films when they've got their own films to put on? If you wish to have an industry, you have to have an outlet for that industry, and if you're not showing your own films, then you haven't got an industry. I think that definitely needs to be looked at."

::The Sweeney is out on Blu-ray and DVD now, and Ashes is out on DVD on January 28.
