Nicolas Winding Refn will not be directing The Equalizer, according to reports.
The Danish filmmaker had been in talks to direct Denzel Washington in the big-screen adaptation of the 80s crime series, but the deal "fell apart at the last minute, due to unknown reasons," reported Collider.
Sony are now searching for a new director so they can start shooting in May.
Denzel is attached to star as Robert McCall, a former covert operations officer who dedicates his life to helping people in trouble, originally played by Edward Woodward.
Nicolas - who produced the English-language remake of Pusher, starring Agyness Deyn and Richard Coyle - has reunited with Drive actor Ryan Gosling for revenge drama Only God Forgives in the US in May.
He is also attached to direct the remake of Logan's Run and an adaptation of the graphic novel, Button Man.
