JJ Abrams had already suggested that John Williams would be working on the music for Star Wars VII

John Williams will return to compose the musical score for the new Star Wars movie, it has been confirmed.

The legendary composer created the now infamous music for all of the six Star Wars movies and now Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy has announced at Star Wars Celebration Europe that he will write the music for upcoming film Star Wars: Episode VII.

John, 81, told StarWars.com: "The galaxy far, far away, I actually feel like I'm still in it, that I never really left it.

"I haven't seen the script, so the story is still unknown to me, but I can't image there will not be some references to the existing stories that would make appropriate use of some of the earlier themes."

He said of director 47-year-old JJ Abrams: "Even though he is very young, he's also very experienced. He's had some great success with large scale projects which were very difficult, logistically, mechanically, photographically, all of it. he's a very young man, he brings with him a lot of expertise and a lot of great background. I think the combination of youth and experience, you couldn't find a better candidate for this opportunity."

JJ has had a long time collaboration with Michael Giacchino, who has composed music for his TV shows and films including Alias, Lost, the Star Trek reboot and the soon-to-be-released sequel Star Trek Into Darkness.

But he revealed earlier this year: "For Star Wars, it's very early days, but I believe that, going forward, John Williams will be doing that film, because he was there long before I was."

John has worked in film for over 60 years, winning five Oscars, and has scored some of the most memorable movie theme tunes of all time, including Jaws, Superman, the Indiana Jones movies, ET, Jurassic Park and Home Alone.

Disney bought the rights to Lucasfilm last year and announced it would be making at least three new Star Wars films.

Star Wars: Episode VII, directed by JJ, is due out in 2015.
