Jake Gyllenhaal caused quite a few gasps on the red carpet as he shocked fans and his fellow actors with his newly gaunt appearance this week.
The 32-year-old actor was unrecognisable as he posed for photographs at the 17th Annual Hollywood Film Awards.
Gyllenhaal’s cheekbones protruded from his newly-slimmed face as he admitted to losing over 20 pounds, over nine kilos.
The People Magazine Sexiest Man Alive 2009 has embarked on the massive weight loss for his upcoming role as a freelance crime reporter in the underworld of Los Angeles in ‘Nightcrawler’.
Gyllenhaal said he wanted his character to be “literally and figuratively hungry”.
“I knew that Lou [his character] was literally and figuratively hungry... [so I got into the mode] where I was always a bit hungry,’ he told Us Weekly.
“The movie takes place, in a land where I think there is a desert in a lot of ways, great opulence, and at the same time, great vastness and emptiness.”
Gyllenhaal revealed his total weight loss to People magazine, saying he has lost “probably a little over 20 pounds”, nearly 10 kilos.
“It's not different than getting into character for anything,” he said.
“It's more about believing where you are and being present where you are.
“Who's to say what the process is? I have a strange one … but I love what I do.”
He said there was “no technique” for his weight loss, he just “loves” the movie.
