Whedon to direct The Avengers

Buffy The Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon has confirmed he will be directing The Avengers.

He made the announcement about the Marvel Comics-based film at Comic-Con in the US.

Joss says he's working on the outline for the Avengers script.

In a panel, Joss and Lost creator JJ Abrams discussed the future of 3D, the viability of the internet as a vehicle for original programming and what they love about comics, sci-fi and making movies.

JJ says he'll start shooting his new film, Super 8, in September.
