The filmmaker - who was at the helm of the first three Scream movies - will direct original cast members Neve Campbell, David Arquette and Courteney Cox Arquette along with a group of younger actors, Variety reports.

Dimension Films has scheduled a release date of April 12, 2011, which is more than a decade after the release of Scream 3.

The original Scream grossed more than 170 million dollars worldwide in 1996. Scream 2 also took in more than 170 million dollars in 1997 and Scream 3 took over 160 million after it was released in 2000.

Neve, David and Courteney all starred in the first three films, with the last instalment seeing the killer Roman, brother to Sidney (Neve), shot dead, supposedly ending the string of murders forever.

Dimension Films chief Bob Weinstein said: "Scream has been such an integral part of Dimension's history, and I look forward to continuing the franchise."
