Jon Voight has admitted he considered turning down Deliverance because it was too violent, but his future wife Marcheline Bertrand convinced him not to on their second date.

The Ray Donovan actor starred in the 1972 thriller about an ill-fated river rafting trip, but confessed he had found parts of the script difficult to stomach until he showed it to Marcheline soon after they met.

He told TV Times: "When I first read it, I stopped at the rape scene and couldn't get past it for several weeks. It was pretty disturbing and I started questioning whether I should do it."

Jon had just started dating Marcheline, who he would later go on to marry and have two children with, one of whom was Angelina Jolie, and said he showed her the script on their second date.

He recalled: "She didn't flinch during the rape scene and told me, 'Oh, it's a fantastic story. You should definitely do this'."

Actress Marcheline was married to Jon from 1971 until 1980, and died in 2007.
