Grace Jones, Kristen Scott Thomas and Jean Paul Gaultier were among the stars to honour Pedro Almodovar at an Academy evening in London.
Singer and actress Jones brushed up on her Spanish to greet the Oscar-winning director in his native language, while Gaultier - who has designed several costumes for Almodovar's films - joked about proposing to him.
Speaking at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences retrospective of Almodovar's work, Gaultier said he was "extremely flattered" to be asked to work on his films.
The French designer added: "I admire him because he's a big artist, because as a human being he is fabulous, so I love him and I should like to ask him a little question, very personal, 'Do you want to marry me?' "
He referred to the current debate in France about gay marriage, saying: "Maybe I come to Spain and we marry together if you agree, you can tell me the answer after. Te quiero mucho."
Almodovar, who has just finished directing Penelope Cruz and Antonio Banderas in the film I'm So Excited, due out next year, also heard from Quentin Tarantino via videolink. Tarantino saluted him as the contemporary director he admired the most.
Peter Morgan, Stephen Frears and Sally Potter, as well as Almodovar's brother Augustin and his regular composer Alberto Iglesias also spoke at the event.
Almodovar said he was honoured to receive recognition from Hollywood - if a bit surprised.
"My way of creating and producing and directing is so different from the big companies," he said. "I represent all the independent filmmakers who deserve recognition.
"For reasons I don't understand, (Hollywood) made an exception for me. Maybe it's because in my films a lot of things happen, and that entertains them."
