David Cameron's joke during Prime Minister's Questions came as Conservative Oliver Dowden (Hertsmere) spoke about how the "triumphant" Star Wars saga began life at Elstree studios in his constituency.

Mr Cameron told the Commons the UK opening of Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens "is not only very exciting for children and, I have to say, quite a lot of parents who are looking forward to this film".

The making of the film in Britain showed the "strength" of the British film industry, he added.

Mr Dowden said: "The triumphant Star Wars saga began life at Elstree studios in my constituency... it used to produce hits such as The King's Speech and Suffragette..."

John Bercow called "order" amid the noise, adding: "The honourable gentleman is banging on very eloquently about Star Wars and I want to hear it."

Mr Dowden went on: "Will the Prime Minister join me in pledging support for our thriving British film industry, which makes such a valuable social, cultural and economic contribution in Hertsmere and across the UK."

Mr Cameron replied: "I think he raises an important point because this is not only very exciting for children and, I have to say, quite a lot of parents who are looking forward to this film, but this is a film being made in Britain, with many British actors, with some brilliant British technicians, showing the strength of the British film industry, and I would say this, but also backed by the British Government and British taxpayers with the excellent resources that we provide.

"And let me just say to him, as I've worked with him for so many years in so many different ways, and I know that he will never join the dark side."
