Tomb Raider back for a third film

Angelina Jolie starred in the first two Tomb Raider films

Tomb Raider fans will see a third film based on the video game thanks to a deal between MGM and GK Films.

They will develop a new action-adventure franchise based on the Tomb Raider games, said The Hollywood Reporter.

Both games and films follow daredevil archaeologist Lara Croft on expeditions around the globe.

Angelina Jolie took the lead role in the first two films, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider in 2001 and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle Of Life in 2003.

Casting for the third film is yet to be announced.

The first two Tomb Raider films were a big success, grossing a combined 432 million dollars worldwide.

Earlier this month Square Enix, who own the rights to the video game series, released a "reboot" of Tomb Raider featuring a much younger Lara Croft.

GK Films acquired the rights to Tomb Raider in 2011 and their founder Graham King will be the film's producer.

MGM and GK Films announced that development on the new Tomb Raider will begin immediately.
