Tom Hardy says he has turned his back on his old life for good.

The 34-year-old, who is engaged to the actress Charlotte Riley, has struggled in the past with addiction to drink and drugs.

"I don't have the compulsion to drink. Plus, my life's unbelievably better. I don't miss it," the star, who's been sober for eight years, said.

Tom's new films include Warrior and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, and next year's The Dark Knight Rises, as the villain Bane.

He said: "I struggle to try and do the best I can. The fight I have on a constant basis is just to try and better myself."

Tom suffered two broken ribs, a broken toe and torn ligaments in his right hand playing an e-marine in his new film Warrior.

The training regime consisted of eating six small meals a day and working out for eight hours, six days a week for 10 weeks, before the shoot began.

He joked: "I moaned, whined and cried my way though the training, but there is something really invigorating about being punched in the face."

:: Warrior and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy are showing in cinemas now.
