David Thewlis has revealed he loves playing the villain, as he gets "a bit bored" playing good guys.
In forthcoming flick Anonymous, the Harry Potter star plays Queen Elizabeth I's advisor, who is portrayed as the bad guy.
David said: "In this film he's a very machiavellian, mysterious, evil character.
"I always enjoy playing villains. I get a bit bored playing good guys."
Anonymous, directed by Independence Day's Roland Emmerich, presents the theory that actor William Shakespeare was not the author of all his plays, but they were written by Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford, played by Rhys Ifans, instead.
But David insists the film is a celebration of Shakespeare's work.
He said: "It's not an attack on Shakespeare - it's a celebration of Shakespeare.
"There's a lot of Shakespeare performed in the film. It's like a musical - the film keeps stopping while you see Shakespeare's words.
"It's just having a bit of fun with who he might have been, because we know so little about the guy from Stratford."
