The White House Down star said he hopes he can portray the card-throwing and energy-manipulating mutant from Marvel's X-Men one day, because he can relate to him the most.

"I would like to play Gambit. Gambit's my favourite, because I'm from New Orleans - or around that area, my dad's from New Orleans," the 33-year-old actor told Total Film.

The actor added that his familiarity with Louisiana would give him an edge for Gambit's recognisable drawl, saying: "I can do that Cajun accent, I can do that real good."

Channing praised Taylor Kitsch's version of Gambit in 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

"No knock on Taylor Kitsch, though, because I actually like his Gambit, but I've always lived around Cajun people," he continued.

"Gambit was always like the woman-loving, cigarette-smoking, drinking [guy]. He was the punk rock of all the superheroes. He's a thief. He kind of rode the line."

Channing, who stars in action thriller White House Down with Jamie Foxx, is set for dark drama Foxcatcher and has been filming the Wachowski siblings' Jupiter Ascending in London.

The actor - who became a father when wife Jenna gave birth to their daughter Everly on May 31 - is also about to start shooting the 21 Jump Street sequel, 22 Jump Street, with Jonah Hill, and is attached to developing the Magic Mike sequel.
