Jason Segel is set to play a maple syrup thief in a new film, based on true-life events.

The How I Met Your Mother star will take the lead role in the as-yet-untitled comedy-drama, reported Deadline.

Horrible Bosses director Seth Gordon is on board to take the reins of the movie for Sony Pictures, which has a script written by Family Guy's Chris Sheridan.

Inspired by real events reported by Anne Sutherland in the Montreal Gazette, the film tells how more than 20 million US dollars worth of maple syrup was stolen from Quebec's Federation of Maple Syrup Producers in 2012. More than 20 people were arrested in connection to the crime.

Jason, who continues his TV role as Marshall Eriksen in the final series of How I Met Your Mother, has reunited with director Nicholas Stoller for comedy Sex Tape, which also stars Cameron Diaz.

Seth is tipped to team up with Horrible Bosses stars Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis for thriller One Night On The Hudson after passing on the directing job for Horrible Bosses 2.
