The Only Lovers Left Alive actress was asked by the Coen brothers to play an English character when she starred in their 2008 film and said she relished developing the part.

Asked by Total Film how excited she had been, she said: "Very. Particularly because they wanted me to be English. I was incredibly excited about that and I immediately thought about her as a cross between Basil Fawlty and Sybil.

"There's something about that passive aggressive that I found funny."

Tilda, 53, also said she had never expected to win an Oscar before picking up Best Supporting Actress for Michael Clayton.

She said: "It certainly wasn't ever on my horizon, as far as I was concerned, to go to the Oscars. Frankly that feels like a bit of a red herring.

"I'm not complaining, if it helps make the films I want to make, I'm not going to mess with it. But I don't know if people aim themselves at that kind of thing."
