'PHILOMENA' is bowing out of Irish cinema on a high, having earned more than €1.3m.

The drama overtook a number of big budget Hollywood movies to place within the Irish top 20 films last year, out of a total of more than 700.

The independently produced film was also a hit internationally, falling inside last year's top 100 films worldwide, with a running total that is now approaching €45m.

It also received an impressive four Oscar nominations last week, including Best Picture, and Best Actress for Judi Dench in the title role of Philomena Lee.

The success has meant a busy few weeks for the woman whose story inspired the original book.

Over the weekend, Philomena Lee attended the Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles with her daughter Jane.

'Philomena' tells the true story of Ms Lee, who unwillingly gave her son up for adoption 50 years ago after giving birth to him out of wedlock.
